Synopsis
The French expedition to the Himalayas, organised by the French Alpine Club (Lyons Section), left Marseille on the 24th April 1951 for India. The team was composed by Roger Duplat, chief of the expedition, Louis Gevril, the second in charge, Alain Barbezat, Louis Dubost, Paul Gendre, Gilbert Vignes, Louis Payan, Doctor; and Jean-Jacques Languepin the cameraman who arrived in Delhi by air. On the third of June, the team was got together at Lata, the last cvilised centre, after having traversed in three days of difficulting marching, the deep valleys of the Alaknanda and the Dauli Ganga. In spite of many difficulties met with the recruitement of the Nepalese porters, the base camp was established the 18th of June. Then started the ascent of Nanda Devi (7,816 metres) by successive stages: the first camp being set at 5,720 metres, the second at 6,100 metres and the third at 6,450 metres. But already several members of the expedition suffered from the altitude. However, Roger Duplat and Gilbert Vignes continued toward the crest with two Sherpas...
