By day, Monsieur Balboss (Michel Galabru) is a respectable policeman. By night, he seeks solace with prostitutes. Neither life enables him to make much sense of the sickness he sees in himself and in the world around him. Indeed, he is a complex, tricky man. In his work he is accustomed to promising kidnappers anything to get their hostages freed and then gunning them down at the first opportunity. Of particular interest is his tragic relationship with a young thief with whom he unburdens himself.
