Synopsis
Georges Bréval lives alone with his daughter Irène. He spends his time trying to discover new explosives. But due to a lack of money, he has had to resort to enlisting the help of a German, a man named Schwarzmann. Bréval is recalled to the army and is sent to the front as a reserve lieutenant. Some time before the declaration of war, Schwarzmann, speculating on Bréval's poverty, had made him sign an agreement by which Bréval gave Schwarzmann all the rights to a new explosive in return for a sum of money that the German paid him. Schwarzmann hence goes looking for Bréval in a village near the Eastern front. Bréval accepts everything but decides that the German will pay a high price for it. He leads Schwarzmann to his house, gives him the formula and then blows up the laboratory. Schwarzmann dies in the explosion, Bréval himself is hit. Shortly afterwards, dying, he receives a military medal for his act.
