An interesting slice of cold war politics from the early ’60s, A Touch of Treason is a very serious look at what happens when someone breaks into a high-security safe of a Russian embassy official in France. Questioned by the KGB, the man fears for his own life (and that of his young, freedom-loving French friends), until he’s kidnapped by a mysterious criminal organization who are after the code that will unlock the secrets of the documents that were stolen. When the French secret service, led by the suave Roger Hanin (a veteran of French spy films of the ’50s and ’60s), is called in to investigate, find the kidnapped official, and retrieve the documents (hopefully before the Russians get them back), it’s a race against time. Before the film’s end, the vicious KGB assassins will join with French agents to locate the man, before the criminals either murder him to seek the information that they want... or hand him over to the American embassy !
