Hanna is thirteen years old in 1963, a year when everything will fall into place, when anything seems possible. Her father is a stateless Jewish poet – tormented and anonymous – her mother a weary, fragile Catholic mother. Her older brother is affectionate and understanding, her best friend is sweet, and her teacher bears an unsettling resemblance to Nana (the Anna Karina character in "My Life to Live"). This is the world in which Hanna must blossom, seek her identity, try to become an independent young woman responsible for her own life.

About
"I think my movies deal with what's difficult, missing, unsettled. There's no point in making films about uncomplicated matters. The feminine presence in my films is always personified by the mother. A father may be there, but he always plays a relatively secondary role. Basically, he doesn't add anything special on a creative level. My mother's very absence has become the almost inexhaustible theme of my work."
