Educated in Yorkshire, England and Paris.
Set up the first British contemporary art fair in Bath, in 1980, and was subsequently asked by Kodak to project lead the major touring exhibition 'The Living Body'. She joined The Royal Photographic Society in 1985, was responsible for the public face of the Society, its archives and the commercial Centre in Bath. Became Company Secretary and CEO RPS in 1990 - the first woman CEO in the Society's history.
She moved to the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford in Spring 1994 as Head of Museum. During the next nine years the Museum re-invented itself with a £16 million re-development fulfilling an ambitious vision taking it into the new digital era. The museum welcomed over one million visitors in 2000 and won a raft of national and international awards for design, content, innovation and excellence.
In June 2003 she joined the bfi as the organisation's director.
