This screening serves as a way to pay a special tribute to the esteemed French actor Jean Rochefort, who passed away on October 9, as this animated short film was one of the last occasions in which Jean Rochefort lent his unique and captivating voice to a film.
A film produced in 2015, directed by Émile Dumas, The Rats is based on a text and drawings from 1968 by Philippe Dumas, the filmmaker’s father. These works form a visionary eco-friendly pamphlet that makes a political comparison between cars—which at the time were taking up more and more of people’s living space—and rodents.
Forty-five years after this artistic work was created, Jean Rochefort provided the narration for this film, bringing all the suave irony for which he is famed to this compelling parable on the proliferation of vehicles.
Actively supported by UniFrance, The Rats has been screened around the world, notably in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, the United States, and the Czech Republic.
