Political changes in Ukraine and their consequences on the film industry
Elected the president of Ukraine on May 20, 2019, Volodymir Zelensky, actor, screewriter, producer, director… and comedian, is now on all fronts to transform the second most populated country in Eastern Europe after Russia, blighted by corruption and cut off from a large part of its territory (Crimea and East Ukraine), anchor it to Europe without angering his great Russian neighbor, get the country's economy back on a healthy track, and, to a lesser extent, strengthen its film industry by calling into question the state levers, often incomplete, that were established by previous governments.
Named the Minister of Culture on August 29 this year, Volodymir Borodiansky held his first press conference relating to film during the 9th Kyiv Media Week (September16-20). Although production aid was immediately put in the hot seat by the new minister (parliament must give a ruling on the legality of the latest pitchings, after which the sum commited for funding will put a strain on the budget over the next three years), a certain number of other branches of the industry were studied during the week. French cinema was concerned with the changes that should soon intervene.
