21 French productions or coproductions will be presented in the various selections at the Berlin International Film Festival (February 6 –17, 2002), 4 of which have been selected for Official Competition. Many professionals from the French film industry will be present, particularly at the Film Market and for a French-German day planned for February 8.
Every year, Unifrance organizes a stand at the European Film Market, and this year will be no different. 14 French sales companies will be present: Celluloid Dreams, Films Distribution, Flach Pyramide International, Gaumont, Gemini Films, Les FIlms du Losange, Mercure Distribution, MK2, Pathé International, Président Films, Roissy Films, TF1 International, The Coproduction Office, UGC International.
The stand provides each sales company with an individual office. This functional setup regrouping 14 companies in one central space is highly practical and the companies benefit from the many visiting professionals it attracts.
Unifrance also publishes a guide, “French Productions”, for the event.
Other French sales agents – Europa Corp., F For Film, Marathon, Tvor, Wild Bunch – will also be present at Berlin, each with their own stand. In all, some 20 French companies will be attending the Berlin Film Market to present their 2002 lineup.
On February 8, the German Minister of the Arts, Julian Nida-Rümelin, will preside over a reunion of the French German Academy. The meeting will be followed by a roundtable, “From Astérix to Amélie: The Boom of French/German Coproductions”. Organized by the Berlinale and the Federal Department of the Arts, the roundtable will be jointly chaired by David Kessler, CNC director, and Rolf Bähr, FFA director.
French professionals who will be attending: Humbert Balsan (Ognon Pictures), Etienne Comar (Playtime), Frédérique Dumas (Noé productions), Margaret Menegoz (Les Films du Losange) and Claudie Ossard (Victoire Productions). Maria Köpf (X-Film), Rainhard Klooss (Odeon Film), Alfred Hürmer (Integral Film) will be the German participants. It will be a public discussion.
European Film Promotion will again be organizing “Shooting Stars”, just as they do every year. The aim of this event is to promote young European actors. France will be represented by Rachida Brakni, who appears in Coline Serreau’s latest film “Chaos”, selected for the Panorama section.
