Six-year-old Bi lives with his parents, his aunt, and their cook in an old house in Hanoi. His favorite playgrounds are an ice cube factory and the wild grass growing along the riverside. After many years away, Bi's grandfather, who is seriously ill, returns to live with the family. While Bi gets closer to his grandfather, his father tries to avoid his own father and his family. Every evening, he gets drunk and goes to visit his masseuse, whom he is strongly attracted to. Bi's mother turns a blind eye. His aunt, who is still single, meets a sixteen-year-old boy on a bus. Her feelings for him turn her life upside down...
