After a failed suicide attempt, he is admitted to hospital and obliged to share a room with Jack, a grumpy old bar owner who has just suffered his fifth heart attack. With no family and feeling that the end isn't far off, Jack takes Lucas under his wing with the intention of passing on his heritage of the bar to the younger man. When he leaves hospital, Lucas begins his apprenticeship in this place regulated by strict rules and "philosophy." Against all expectations, an atypical friendship develops between the old cynic and the young idealist. All seems to be going according to Jack's last wishes, until a rainy night in April when a drunken air hostess comes into the bar.
