September 2006. Throughout France, pupils are returning to school. In Chantilly, thirty 14-year-old girls and boys enter the doors of the “Moulin à Vent” boarding school, a training center for future stable lads and jockeys. Three years later, the best will be jockeys, while the others will have learnt the job of stable lads. For these young students, the shock is often violent. They leave the family cocoon and enter the harsh reality of a world where time means nothing and the horse’s comfort comes before that of human beings. Working with the trainers, they discover fear, forceful sensations, the power of racing horses, the rugged world of adults, tiring physical work, the boss’s terse orders, the joys of a heady gallop, complicity with their horse, and the complete abnegation that they must show in order to succeed. The film follows the first-year class: Steve, Flavien and Florian are part of the group. They share an adolescent world, with its first flirtations, cell phones, mp3, and dreams of wealth and glory. However, not all will fulfill the much-hoped for dream. Florian is already, in his own mind, a future crack jockey and seems to possess the necessary qualities to become one. Steve, scared to death of horses, will no doubt become an excellent groom. Flavien is not yet sure of his future and wonders about what he could become in this profession. At the end of the year, we follow one of the students during his first race and therefore his official entry into the world of “pilots.” which will take him from apprenticeship to jockey status.
