Nicolas Luhel, a young police captain, arrives in Plouescat, in France's Finistère Nord region.
He's there to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a teenager, who fell from a neighboring dike. The boy's mother accuses her ex-husband, Serge Tanguy, of being the murderer. But the motives behind the crime remain obscure. The violence of the murder, the wildness of the surrounding landscape and the solitude which fills his days and nights begin to have an effect on Luhel. He's soon prey to anxiety attacks and strange impulses. When the main witness commits suicide, he feels even more vulnerable and is soon caught up in the spell of disturbing fascination that Tanguy exerts over his entourage.
