Kedma

A Feature film by Amos Gitaï

Produced by MP Productions, Agav Films

Release in France : 22/05/2002

    Synopsis

May 7, 1948. For six months now, battles between Jews and Arabs have been raging in Palestine. A week later, the British end their Mandate and get ready to leave the country. Ben Gourion proclaims the creation of the State of Israel. A freighter, the Kedma (To the Orient) heads for this new land. Hundreds of Holocaust survivors from all over Europe are packed into the ship. Among them are Rosa, from Russia, Janusz from Poland, and Roman who has escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. Menahem, a teenager focussed on his book of prayers, only speaks Yiddish. Stories, memories, whispers and songs abound as the ship approaches the coast.
On a beach in Palestine, Moussa and his Palmach (the secret Jewish army) fighters get ready to welcome the newcomers. A squadron of British soldiers stations itself high in the hills so as to foil this illegal landing.
