Synopsis
After her father’s death, Emilie sets herself up in the farm in Normandy where she takes care of local folk.
Jules travels, searching for spiritual experiences. Henri marries the daughter of an ambassador and begins a diplomatic career.
In 1979, the three characters come together in various ways.
Henri visits Emilie: he speaks of his happiness, she of her joy. They realize that, in the here and now, nothing remains between them.
Emilie, in a final letter to Jules, recounts a story which comes to symbolize for both of them their union of body and soul, even though neither of them have ever met. She also reveals that, unbeknown to Henri, she has borne his child.
In a final meeting, Jules befriends the little girl and her destiny causes the three adults to be reunited. Every night, the light in the child’s window will be a sign of their connection.
