Synopsis
1850. Saint-Pierre, a small, isolated island off the coast of Canada. One night, a man is brutally murdered. The killer, Neel Auguste, is sentenced to death. But the island has no guillotine and no executioner to carry out the sentence. The French government promises to remedy the situation but it’s likely to be a long wait. Neel Auguste is locked up in a cell near the home of the local army captain and humbly awaits his execution. Deeply moved by Neel’s attitude and against the opinion of the island’s notables, the captain’s wife undertakes to bring about the condemned man’s redemption.
