Together they hatch a plan to pass Marc off as gay and have him move in with Lisa. In no time at all, our roughneck reporter is dolled up as a dithering queen. False impressions and misconceptions follow thick and fast, but the fun really starts when Marc falls genuinely in love with Lisa, and she with him...
The basic storyline — an inveterate macho having to pretend to be homosexual in order to house-share with a very attractive executive woman recovering from a messy divorce — could have resulted in a somewhat trivial light comedy. We chose to adopt exactly the opposite approach and take a clear-eyed, sympathetic look at the relationships that develop between a man and a woman when the codes of seduction are (temporarily) lifted. We opted to make a comedy film that is, we hope, often funny but also affectionate. I have no qualms at all about labelling “What I Did For Love” a “romantic comedy”.
