Un hiver au bout du monde

A Feature film by Can Togay

Produced by 47ème Parallèle

Release in France : 07/07/1999

    Synopsis

Winter '89–90. Movies are the only distraction in a mountain village in central Europe, usually cut off from the world in winter. But one day the motorcyclist who normally delivers the films has an accident, and is not replaced by the "Center." Without movies, the village is suddenly all on its own; the villagers become unruly, and the mayor has trouble dealing with them. Despite his son's attempts to re-edit old reels, the mayor decides to close the movie theater, which has become a hotbed of rebellion. When spring returns, the first truck carrying provisions also brings news: the Center no longer exists, the Revolution of '89 has occurred.

    Subject

Before letting this period die, I wanted to depict its legendary side in the manner of a brightly colored painting darkened by chiaroscuro shadows. The film's light colors are composed of children living in a tragic-comic, animated world. They are flanked by adults of various ages, who appear mysterious in the children's eyes – people who have actually experienced the stories and history of a clamorous eastern European village. The film basically concerns the wonders of childhood, movies, and love.
