Paris 1914. A young woman, Marie Benjamin is found lying on the floor in a large department store clutching a remnant of red silk convulsively against her. Arrested and transferred to the prison infirmary she is questioned at lenght by psychiatrist Gabriel de Villemer. In discovering the strange and sensual rapport this young illiterate seamstress has with silk, Gabriel can no longer hide his own inner turmoil. He himself is smitten by the delicate pleasures such fabrics can offer... Thus two beings originally worlds apart are drawn together.

"For me, my heroine, Marie Benjamin, is neither ill nor crazy. She simply has a particular longing (a fetishist love for silk) which she seeks to assuage at all costs, even if, in doing so, she is sent to prison or to the asylum. For her, this craving is a driving force, not a burden. It's what keeps her alive and what enables her to struggle against all the odds. Like her, we all have secret desires which we must assuage if we want to stay alive, and I believe we owe it to ourselves to come to know such longings so that we may live our lives in harmony with them."
