Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

A Feature film by Marion Hänsel

Release in France : 21/02/1996

    Synopsis

An old freighter, belonging to a company that has gone out of business, drops anchor off Hong Kong. The crew has to wait a week or more to get paid. After that, who knows what lies ahead ? Among the sailors is Nikos, a radio operator, a man of few words, weary of life, an introvert and opium addict, and Li, a little Chinese girl living on the sampans in the bay of Hong Kong, doing cleaning work on the ships while they're in port. "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is the story of the friendship that arises between this lost man and a bright little girl who won't let herself be defeated, who keeps her innocence in spite of the chaos in her life.

    Subject

"I tried to transcribe as best I could, the simplicity, almost translucent luminosity of Nikos Kavvadias' beautiful short story "Li". Childhood... clear of mind, unprejudiced and uncompromising, children with their courage (which we adults lack), have the power to change us ... the world. To watch them, to listen and to stay close to them, reassures, guides and helps me to make my films."
