Far from the Barbarians

A Feature film by Liria Bégéja

Produced by KG Productions

Release in France : 13/04/1994

    Synopsis

In the early 1960s, Selman Peza fled Albania by sea, taking with him his one-year-old niece Zana. He wanted to get away from the terrible regime, away from the barbarians.
Zana was told that Marieta, her mother, died trying to escape, and that Omer, her father, suffered the same fate a few years later.
Now Zana is getting ready to leave Paris to live permanently in New York with Vincent. Several days before her departure, Zana receives a mysterious phone call that upsets her - a stranger asks to speak to Omer, her "father", who died twenty-five years ago.
The caller is Vladimir, an Albanian being held at Roissy Airport near Paris for lack of visa. He claims to be related to Zana, and tells her that Omer is still alive, having fled Albania with a certain Luan Kodra.
Despite Selman's misgivings, Zana is filled with hope - the story of her father's death had always been vague.
Zana wants to discover the truth. Even if it means placing herself in danger, or losing those dearest to her - Selman and Vincent. And Zana does lose them both, but discovers the truth in the form of a terrible time bomb set ticking thirty years ago under the Stalinist regime in Albania...
