Complete filmography
BiographyCatherine Breillat works simultaneously as an author, filmmaker and screenwriter. In 1968, she made a splash by writing a novel, "L'homme facile" that was prohibited to people under 18—when she herself was only 17! Her writing career was underway and she followed her first novel with several others: "Le silence après" (published by François Wimille), "Les Vêtements de mer" (a play, also published by François Wimille), "Le Soupirail" (Guy Autier). She also continued her career as a screenwriter, writing or co-writing 14 screenplays including: "Catherine et compagnie" (1975) directed by Michel Boisrond; "Bilitis" (1976) by David Hamilton; "Police" (1985) by Maurice Pialat; "Zanzibar" (1989) by Christine Pascale. In 1976, Breillat directed her first film, "Une vraie jeune fille, " based on her novel "Le Soupirail," and followed it with "Tapage nocturne" (1979), "36 fillette" (1988), "Dirty Like an Angel" (1991) and "Perfect Love!" (1996). Her work has a consistently distinctive style and Breillat strives to depict human and sexual relationships in a brutally honest way. "Romance," her sixth feature, was released in France at the beginning of 1999. The film’s novel approach to recounting a love story through the uninhibited plumbing of the depths of female sexuality caused a considerable uproar. "Romance" has since been bought by 30 countries. The previously unreleased (for censorship reasons) "Une vraie jeune fille" was finally seen in French theaters at the beginning of June, 2000. Breillat has recently completed work on her latest feature "Fat girl" (working title).
