Louis Garrel begins his actor's career in front of his father's camera at the age of 6 in Emergency Kisses. He pursues his theatre training and enters the Superior National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. He then makes a sensational entrance into the cinema by acting for Bertolucci then Philippe Garrel in Regular Lovers, a role which entitles him to the César for Best Male Hopeful. In 2004, he is directed for the first time by Christophe Honoré in My Mother, co-starring Isabelle Huppert. He becomes one of the fetish actors of the director who shoots no less than six films with him. In 2008, he steps for the first time behind the camera. The Little Tailor, his second short, is highly remarked at many festivals.
