Biography

A dancer, Anne Fontaine made her debut in the movies as an actress. She directed her first film, “Love Affairs Usually End Badly,” awarded the Prix Jean Vigo, in 1993. Two years later, in her middle-length feature “Augustin,” she sketched the portrait of a timid and weak man. The character, played by Jean- Chrétien Sibertin-Blanc, was also the hero of “Augustin, King of Kung-Fu,” made in 1999. Between these two films, Anne Fontaine directed the lovers’ triangle Charles Berling / Miou Miou / Stanislas Merhar (César for Best Male Newcomer) in “Dry Cleaning” in 1997. This story about the havoc-generating arrival of a young man in the lives of a couple who run a dry-cleaning business attracted a lot of attention and won the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival. Four years later, Charles Berling worked with Fontaine a second time in “How I Killed My Father,” a family drama that earned Michel Bouquet the César for Best Actor.

In “Nathalie” (2003), Fontaine directed a prestigious cast: Fanny Ardant, Emmanuelle Béart and Gérard Depardieu. She favored a more raw mise en scène for her next film “Entre ses mains” (2005), with Isabelle Carré and Benoît Poelvoorde, that she describes as an “intimate thriller.” “Nouvelle chance” brings together an elderly forgotten actress in a welfare center, a pool boy at the Ritz Hotel, a heroine of a popular soap, and a young, disturbingly beautiful man who all take a last chance on fulfilling their dreams. Her ninth film will be released in France, November 8, 2006.
