Biography

At the age of 15, Agnès Jaoui joined the Cours Florent drama school. She went on to study, some years later, at the Ecole de Comédiens du Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre, under the direction of Patrice Chéreau. It was in 1987 that she met Jean-Pierre Bacri, with whom she wrote numerous stage plays including “Kitchen With Apartment” (1991) and “Family Resemblances” (1994.) In the cinema, she has worked as both actress and screenwriter. As an actress, she appeared notably in “Hôtel de France” by Patrice Chéreau, “Kitchen With Apartment” by Philippe Muyl, “Family Resemblances” by Cédric Klapisch, “Same Old Song” by Alain Resnais (for which she was awarded the Cesar for Best Supporting Actress,) “Le Cousin” by Alain Corneau and “Une femme d’extérieur” by Christophe Blanc. As a screenwriter, Jaoui wrote the screen adaptation of “Kitchen With Apartment” and “Family Resemblances” together with Jean-Pierre Bacri. She won the Cesar for Best Screenplay for “Smoking – No Smoking” (1994) and “Same Old Song” (1998,) both directed by Alain Resnais. Jaoui made her directing debut with “It Takes All Kinds” (US title: “The Taste of Others”,) for which she also wrote the screenplay with Jean-Pierre Bacri. The film was released in France on March 1st, 2000. This film features, alongside of Agnès Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri, the talents of Gérard Lanvin, Alain Chabat and Anne Alvaro, and has met with considerable popular success.
