Before becoming a director, Jean-Paul Lilienfeld was a screenwriter. In 1986, he co-wrote "L'Eté en pente douce" with Gérard Krawczyk, and in 1986, with Patrick Braoudé he co-wrote "L'oeil au beurre noir" for Serge Meynard… In 1990, he directed his first short film, "Il n'y a guerre que les actions qui montent," which was selected for numerous festivals. He wrote and directed his first feature, "Un ange passe," in 1992. This was followed by "XY" (1996) and "Quatre garçons pleins d'avenir" (1997).
