Complete filmography
BiographyJean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne spent their childhood in Belgium, in an industrial region alongside the river Meuse. They grew up in a household that took a keen interest in social issues. At the beginning of the seventies, Jean-Pierre trained to be an actor at the Institute for Entertainment Arts. He met Armand Gatti and become his assistant for several theatrical shows. Luc joined them, while studying philosophy at Louvain University. From 1974 to 1977, Luc and Jean-Pierre shot a series of videos about conditions in workers' housing estates. In 1975, "the Brothers" (as their colleagues called them) established the Collectif Dérives, which would become a documentary production studio. Luc was Armand Gatti's 1st Assistant Director, Luc 1st Assistant Cameraman, for "Nous étions tous des noms d'arbres." After an eight-year stint making documentaries, the Dardenne Brothers switched to fiction films with "Falsch," their first feature adapted from a play by René Kalisky. This was followed by "Je pense à vous" (1992) and "The Promise" (1996), a major critical and popular success (250,000 entries in France), and winner of many international prizes. This success was a liberation for Luc and Jean-Pierre, a vindication of their work. After this film, they settled back into a normal rhythm, dividing their time between teaching at college and promoting documentaries. Nevertheless, they quickly got to work on their next film. A portrait of a woman took shape: "Rosetta," winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1999 Cannes International Film Festival. Its lead actress, Emilie Dequenne, was also awarded the Best Actress prize.
