Arthur Joffé began working in the movies by making short films, including "La Découverte" in 1980, which received the Montreal World Film Festival's Grand Prix of the Americas, and "Merlin ou le cours de l'or," which won the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the 1982 Cannes International Film Festival. One year later, he directed "Casting," his first feature film, which won the 1983 Cannes Youth Jury Prize. In 1985, "Harem" brought Nastassja Kinski and Ben Kingsley together and was nominated for 5 Cesars. In 1989, "Alberto Express," with Sergio Castellitto, Nino Manfredi and Marie Trintignant, figured in the 1992 top ten list of US releases, all countries taken together. Amongst others, this film received the Best Comedy Prize at the 1990 Quebec Film Festival. Joffé's fourth feature film, "Let There Be Light," offered Hélène de Fougerolles her first lead part for which she was nominated the 1998 Cesar for Most Promising Young Actress.
