Biography

Sam Karmann first became known as an actor. After being directed on stage by Jean-Pierre Bouvier, Jean-Louis Barrault, Maurice Béjart, Robert Hossein, Stéphane Meldegg and Gildas Bourdet, he switched to television where he acted in many TV dramas. In cinema, he appeared in, amongst other films: Alexandre Arcady's "Le Grand Pardon" (1980) and "Le Grand Carnaval" (1983); Samuel Fuller's "Thieves After Dark" (1984); Roger Hanin's "Train d'enfer" (1985) and "La Rumba" (1987); Denis Amar's "L'Abbé Pierre (1989); Philippe Muyl's "Kitchen with Apartment" (1992); the Nuls' "Fear City: A Family-Style Comedy" (1994); Martin Lamotte's "Ca reste entre nous" (1997) and recently in Agnès Jaoui's "Le Goût des autres." His directing debut was a masterstroke – "Omnibus," his first short, won the Palme d'Or at the 1992 Cannes International Film Festival and the Oscar for Best Short in 1993. Karmann directed his first feature film, "Kennedy and I," in 1999. He also stars in the film, alongside Jean-Pierre Bacri and Nicole Garcia.
