Biography

French-born Philomène Esposito grew up in the Italian immigrant community on the French south coast. She studied sculpture in Nice before becoming assistant to the famous filmmaker of the south, René Allio. After shooting a few short films, she directed "Mima" (1991), a movie inspired by her cultural roots, which featured newcomer Virginie Ledoyen in her movie debut. Esposito's second film, "Toxic Affair" (1993) with Isabelle Adjani, was the closing night film at the Cannes International Film Festival. She went on to make several made-for-TV films, including a New York Television Film Festival prizewinner, "Julia's Secret" (1996), a documentary film "Sous les jupes de la Madone," and a TV series for France 2, "Les Ritaliens." In 1999 she returned to the big screen with her third feature, "Toni," which brings together Alessandro Gassmann, Béatrice Dalle and Raf Vallone. Esposito is currently developing a new project titled "Le Français."
