Biography

Son of a German actress and a stage director, Michael Haneke grows up in Austria where he follows philosophy and psychology studies in Vienna. He then directs theatre plays, and writes and directs many TV films in the 70’ and 80’. One of them, The Seventh Continent, rejected by the broadcasters, becomes his first feature film in 1989. This film opens a trilogy, selected by the Directors’ Fortnight, based on the emotional glaciation (emotionale Vergletscherung) and is completed with Benny’s Video (1992) and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1994).
In 1997, Funny Games is in competition at Cannes and causes a great stir among the festival goers.
In 2000, Haneke makes two major encounters with French actresses: first Juliette Binoche (Code Unknown: Incomplete Tales of Several Journeys), then with Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher). This last film is awarded the Jury Prize and the two actors, Isabelle Huppert and Benoit Magimel the Best Actress and Actor Awards.
After The Time of the Wolf, Michael Haneke works on the ghosts of the Algeria War in Hidden, where he directs Juliette Binoche once again and Daniel Auteuil for the first time. In Cannes 2005, Haneke wins the Best Director Award with this film.
