BiographyAfter studying film at the Cuban Art Institute, directed by Santiago Alvarez, Flora Gomes continued his studies under Pauline Vieyra in Senegal. Upon discovering the films of Sembene Ousmane, he decided to become a film director. His first feature, “Mortu Nega” (1987), garnered two Jury Special Mentions at the Venice Film Festival, the Oumarou Best First Feature prize at the Ouagadougou Film Festival and Second Prize at the Aveiro International Film Festival. His second, “The Blue Eyes of Yonta” (1992), was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Its lead, Bia Gomes, was awarded Best Actress Award at the Ougadougou Film Festival and the film won the Jury Prize at the Greek Film Festival. “Tree of Blood,” his third feature, featured in Official Competition at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. |
