Complete filmography
BiographyPascal Thomas, a former journalist, became a filmmaker when Claude Berri suggested that he transform his project for a novel into the screenplay of his first short film, "Le Poème de l’élève Mikovsky" (1971). He then made his first feature, "Les Zozos" (1972), in which he revealed himself as an auteur fortunate and privileged enough to be able to give serious issues a light-hearted slant. Beneath the surface comedy of his films lies something much more dramatic. As the majority of his features are comedies of manners, mostly played by non-professional actors or a mix of top actors with ordinary people, and given that they are aimed for general audience appeal, Pascal Thomas occupies a rather special place in French cinema. This is perfectly summed up by Olivier Séguret from the daily newspaper Libération, upon release of "La Dilettante," his eleventh feature film: “Pascal Thomas is a one-off, and serves as an example. For some thirty years he has dwelt within French cinema with that intelligence common to all the interesting filmmakers of this curious country of ours: he is special. From "Zozos" to "Pleure pas la bouche pleine," from "Chaud lapin" to "Confidences pour confidences," from "Celles qu’on n’a pas eues" to "Les Maris, les femmes, les amants", he has called his shots with a casual, unhurried, yet stubborn tranquility, as if each time he were driving home a nail. These are films tempered with irony that tell the tale of human feeling.”
