Eric Besnard graduated from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris, and co-edited the «Livre d'Or du Cinéma» with Michel Lebrun (1983–1984). He was also screenwriter on several made-for-TV films between 1993 and 1998. From 1991 to 1995 he was production manager and then executive producer for Septembre Productions. Besnard has directed several short films such as «Une belle âme» (1994), «Tic Tac» (1996) and «Le Paradoxe du comédien» (1996). «Le Sourire du clown» is his first feature film.
