Complete filmography
BiographyChilean-born director Raoul Ruiz was one of the key movie personalities in his country in the sixties, before becoming cinema advisor to President Allende. Forced into exile on Allende's overthrow, Ruiz went to work for French and German television. He did not give up the movies, however, continuing to make films both in Europe and the U.S.A. His films, with their strange atmospheres and paradoxical subjects, display a marked originality that is increasingly appreciated by the public, despite their demanding nature. In France, he has directed several feature films: "L'oeil qui ment" (1992), "Three Lives and One Death" (1996) starring Marcello and Chiara Mastroianni, "Genealogies of a Crime" (1997), featuring Catherine Deneuve and Michel Piccoli, and "Time Regained," an adaptation of Marcel Proust's novel, which was selected in the Official Competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Ruiz went on to make two new films: "Combat d'amour en songe" with Elsa Zylberstein and Melvil Poupaud and “The Comedy of Innocence,” starring Isabelle Huppert, Charles Berling and Jeanne Balibar, which was presented in the Official Selection at the 2000 Venice Film Festival. Ruiz's latest film, “Les âmes fortes,” was shot in 2001. The film is adapted from a novel by Jean Giono and stars Laeticia Casta and Arielle Dombasle.
