Biography

Rithy Panh was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was 11 years old when the Khmer Rouge entered the city, interning him in re-education camps. He managed to escape in 1979 and make his way to the Mairu refugee camp in Thailand. He arrived in France in 1980 and resumed his schooling. In 1985, he enrolled at the IDHEC Film School. After graduating, he made a short fiction film, “Le Passé imparfait” (1988), and went on to make various documentaries about Cambodia, including “Cambodge entre guerre et paix” (1992). His first feature, “Rice People,” was presented at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, where it was Highly Commended by the Ecumenical Jury.
