Biography

Born in Romania but now based in France, Radu Mihaileanu ran a theater company in his native Romania, writing, directing and acting in plays. He fled the Ceaucescu dictatorship in 1980 and went to Israel. From there he came to France and studied at the IDHEC film school (1980-83). From 1984 to 1991, he worked as assistant director, notably for Marco Ferreri, Jean-Pierre Mocky and Nicole Garcia, and co-authored several film scripts, including Ferreri’s "Banchetto di Platone." He directed a number of short films before making his first feature, "Betrayal" in 1993, which won numerous international awards.
