Biography

Otar Iosseliani was born in Tbilisi in Georgia and gave up studies in music and science to enrol at the VGIK (the Moscow film school). His first short film "Avril" (1961), a kind of parable, revealed one of the constant features of his intellectual approach: his concern about human relationships and life. "La Chute des feuilles," his first feature film in 1966, awarded the Fipresci Prize at Cannes, marked the launch of his international career. In this film, Iosseliani provided a biting satire on bureaucracy and careerism and, with tenderness and humor, celebrated the virtues of "real life." Subsequently, the majority of his feature films would be showered with prizes in numerous international festivals and his work honored: "Il était une fois un merle chanteur," Best Foreign Film at the Directors' Fortnight in 1974; "Les Favoris de la lune" and "Et la lumière fut," Grand Prize at the Venice Mostra in 1984 and 1989; "La Chasse aux papillons" in 1992. In 1997, he directed "Brigands, chapitre VII," and followed it in 1999 with his thirteenth film "Farewell, Home Sweet Home."
