BiographyMoufida Tlatli grew up in Tunisia in a social environment in which tradition was highly valued. After graduating in editing at the I.D.H.E.C. Film School in 1968, she returned to live in Tunisia in 1972. Her name appeared in the credits of all of the major Arabic films from the seventies to the nineties. In 1993, she directed “The Silences of the Palace,” which was released in France in September 1994, and registered 203,000 spectators. The film was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes in 1994, and received a Special Mention in the Camera d’Or. “The Silences of the Palace” was also presented at many international festivals and won numerous awards: the International Critics Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Satyajit Ray Prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival, The Golden Tulip at the Istanbul International Film Festival and the Tanit d’Or at the Carthage Film Festival. Tlatli’s second feature film, “The Season of Men,” was released in France in December, 2000. It has been selected at many film festivals, including “Un Certain Regard” - Official Selection at the 2000 Cannes Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Biennale at the Arab Institute in Paris (where it won the Grand Prix), the Namur French-language Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. |
